Cultural Activities
December is the season for classical music and dance in Madras/Chennai, although some remnants can be caught in January. Details are available at Chennai Online. WHEPP-X has the pleasure of presenting two cultural programmes during the workshop:
Variety Dance Programme
presented by
Kalakshetra, the renowned school of music
and dance, founded by the legendary Smt Rukmini Devi Arundale, at the
Kalakshetra Auditorium on Jan 4th, 2008, at 18:00.
Transport will be arranged both ways, and dinner will be served late,
after the programme.
Carnatic/fusion Music Programme
presented by M/S Ganesh and
Kumaresh brothers at 18:00 on 9th January, 2008, at IMSc in the Ramanujan
Auditorium. This violin-duo hail from a musical family and their
musical calibre has been recognised all over the world.
Mahabalipuram visit:
A trip to the GRT beach resort Temple Bay
at the historic city of Mahabalipuram (now called Mamallapuram), 35 km
south of IMSc, has been arranged on 7 Jan, 2008. Please sign up before
5 Jan to ensure lunch and a place in the bus.
Director's Dinner
The Director's dinner will follow the music programme on
Sciences at 19:30 on 9th January, 2008.
Transport Arrangements
will be made to transport people to and from the hotels and guesthouses to the venue of the meeting daily.
Facilities at IMSc
Computer terminals will be kept in the 2nd floor lounge of the New Building. About 10 windows machines are available; another 10 are linux machines. The login id and password will be made available at the workshop venue.
Access to the Los Alamos archive is through the
mirror which is located in IMSc
Please do not access LANL directly to conserve bandwidth.
Most of the Institute is wireless-enabled, including seminar halls. Please ensure that your power cable is compatible with the C/D/M plug types used in India.
For those staying in the IMSc guest house, the rooms have ethernet connections. Please bring your own patch cords!!
For those in other guesthouses/hotels, we are not sure of the availability.

In and around Chennai
Tourist Information and Maps The Hello Madras booklet in your bag has information about places of interest in and around Chennai (including Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram) and a small map of the city. TTDC (Tamil Nadu Tourist Development Corporation) and ITDC (Indian Tourist Development Corporation) have guided bus tours to Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram everyday (7:00-19:00). They also have half-day tours of the city.
For people who would like to take off on their own, information about hiring taxis is also available at the Registration Desk or at the Institute office with Mr Sankaran.
